Costco Kirkland Breakfast Sandwich Review

Prep Time: 5 Minutes

Ease: Super Easy

Cost: $18.72

The Kirkland frozen breakfast sandwiches at Costco make for a pretty easy breakfast when you just don’t have time to scramble eggs or fry bacon. They cook quickly in the microwave (in about a minute), the taste is slightly addictive, and they’re pretty cost effective.

That being said, you need to ignore the cooking instructions on the package if you don’t want to find yourself gnawing on an overly chewy croissant or trying to figure out where all your cheese went (hint: it’s all over the paper towel).

Read on to find out how I felt about these breakfast sandwiches overall, and if I’d buy them again. I’ll also give you a valuable tip on how to tweak the cooking instructions so you don’t end up with a half inedible mess.

Flavor Rating

The flavor of these breakfast sandwiches is pretty good — about what you’d expect from a Kirkland frozen breakfast sandwich. That being said, you’re going to want to be careful how you nuke these because if you follow the instructions on the package, the croissant gets tough and the cheese ends up melted to the paper towel.

I was pretty impressed with the bacon, as it’s pretty easy to screw up the flavor and texture of bacon in a frozen breakfast sandwich, but I found the bacon to be the best part.

Overall, I found myself craving one of these sandwiches each morning.

Preparation Rating

It only takes about a minute to cook these breakfast sandwiches in the microwave. But if you follow Costco’s cooking instructions, you’re going to be unhappy with the results. Follow my instructions below, which require a few more steps than the box instructions, and you’ll be happier with the result.

Price Rating

I paid just under $19 for eight frozen breakfast sandwiches at Costco. To put it mildly, these breakfast sandwiches aren’t cheap — though they are much cheaper at Costco than they would be at a regular grocery store.

I raised the price rating slightly on these because I weighed the cost against the ease of preparation and the taste.

Kirkland Breakfast Sandwich Cooking Instructions

Here’s the deal: if you follow Costco’s instructions on these breakfast sandwiches, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. As with most frozen breakfast sandwiches, you’ll want to adjust the cooking time and remove one ingredient before zapping the rest.

Here is (what I found) was the optimal way to cook these sandwiches:

1. Remove the frozen sandwich from the plastic wrapper.

2. Remove the frozen cheese slice.

3. Wrap the sandwich (sans cheese) in a paper towel.

4. Microwave on high for 45 seconds.

5. Unwrap the sandwich from the paper towel and remove the bottom croissant.

6. Place the top part of the croissant upside down on the paper towel; layer the frozen cheese, the bacon, and the egg on top so the bacon and cheese are between the croissant and egg.

7. Wrap the layers of croissant, egg, cheese, and bacon in the paper towel and microwave for an additional 15 to 20 seconds, until the cheese is melted.

8. Remove from the paper towel, add the bottom part of the croissant back to the sandwich, and you’re ready to go!

I simply found this to be the best way to cook the Costco egg sandwich. If I left the bottom part of the croissant in the microwave for too long, it got tough and chewy. If I microwaved the cheese as long as the rest of the sandwich, most of it ended up melted to the paper towel.

ideas TO Make Your Own Kirkland Breakfast Sandwich Copycat

I guess my biggest issue with these breakfast sandwiches was the price. If you don’t mind some extra prep time at the beginning of the week (which to be honest, I do, which is why I’ll be buying these again), you could make your own breakfast sandwiches at a fraction of the price.

Here are some tips on how to make your own Costco copycat breakfast sandwiches.

Start With a Strong, Bread-y Foundation

There are plenty of options for breakfast sandwich bread. If you’re short on time, just make two slices of toast, or toast a brioche bun or an english muffin.

You could also make this breakfast Sandwich a true Costco copycat by slicing a croissant in half (though Costco’s bakery croissants are not in the convenient circular shape you’ll find in the frozen breakfast sandwich).

Pre-Cook Your Eggs

I’m just going to come out and say it: there’s no way to make a pre-cooked batch of scrambled eggs taste good. I hate eggs that are steamed in a sheet pan or in a muffin tin. If you don’t mind the texture of steamed eggs, have at it.

Otherwise, you may want to fry up an egg daily for your Costco copycat breakfast sandwich or consider boiling a batch of hard-boiled eggs at the start of the week.

You could also bake a large batch the Kirkland sous vide egg bites (I use 1/2 egg bite per breakfast sandwich). For 1/2 of an egg bite, you’ll pay around $0.65 at Costco.

Pre-Bake Your Bacon

My preferred method to cook bacon for breakfast sandwiches is to bake it on a rack on a sheet pan for about 15 minutes at 400 F.

Costco Kirkland Frozen Breakfast Sandwich FAQs

  • This is tricky, but here’s the breakdown:

    • Remove the sandwich from the plastic wrapper.

    • Remove the slice of cheese & set aside.

    • Wrap the rest of the breakfast sandwich in a paper towel, and heat on high for 45 seconds.

    • “Sandwich” the cheese between the top half of the croissant and the egg (you can leave the bacon in there too somewhere), wrap back up in the paper towel & heat on high for 15 - 20 more seconds until warmed through.

    • “Reconstruct” the sandwich & enjoy!

  • Sort of. A box of eight frozen breakfast sandwiches at Costco costs $18.72, which means each sandwich costs roughly $2.38. Overall, they’re a bit pricey, but you’re paying for the convenience.

  • These breakfast sandwiches were waaaay better than I thought they’d be. As long as you follow my modified microwaving instructions, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how they turn out. Honestly, I got a little addicted to these and found myself reaching for one every morning for breakfast!
